The Jazzy Lounge Songs of the Week

November 19-25, 2007

Phil Martin "Sweet & Mellow" Don't Loose Your Cool
One of the jazziest tracks Jazzy Lounge has ever played. Cool sexy vocals that seize you layered over jamming rhythm section and a soprano sax solo that soars. Will definitely get you shaking your money maker.

Club Des Belugas "Wildcats Gotta Move (Becker vs Gaertner Der Lueste remix)" South Beach: Lincoln Road
What a fun track. This jazzy track has everything working for it- vocals, arrangement (the Hammond B3 rocks), tempo. Your house party will sizzle with this track.

Emotional "Move On" (promo)
This downtempo beauty will move even the most lethargic person. The constant "move on" refrain catches your attention captures your soul and individual limbs start moving- ,head bobbing, foot tap, leg wiggle, hip shaking.

Kokeshibeatz "Be With Me" Exotic Lounge Vol 1: The Bria Project
From the opening note, you'll jump on the dance floor. Upbeat dance track as the singer lures you in.

Macao Cafe presents Trillian "The Mobius Strip" Chilled Beatz Vol 5: The Bria Project
Whew! That's the first word that exited my lips after hearing this track for the first time and the love for it was immediate. Simple lyrics that mean sooo much, "If I can change, you can change." So much energy is released from this 6:00 minute track, you'll be drained when it's over.

The Jazzy Lounge Songs of the Week

November 12-18, 2007

Keefe Marzell "Now and Forever" Drawn Windows

This smooth jazz track caught my attention while perusing Keefe Marzell's Myspace profile. Randy Scott penned "Now & Forever". Keefe brought in his cousin, Tim Slaughter, to sing on it and intertwines with the sax player to give this track a unique sound.

Web "City Lights" Ballroom Bits

Some of the major sites carrying Ballroom Bits categorize it as rock, but I like to think of the track City Lights as a little bit ballroom, lounge, show tunes, and electronica. Definitely unique in its approach and style.

Tape Five "Bossa Reloaded" (video track)

This video track is a remix of Tape Five's original track "Bossa for a Coupe." Jazzy, lounge and ready for a trip to the Mediterranean, it'll win your heart, if it doesn't steal it first.

Amanaska "Border Crossing" Circles

When listening to Border Crossing, you honestly feel the adventure of moving from one familiar locale to one which brings intrigue and wonderment. As some would say, "A great driving record."

Planet Lounge "Ocean Drive" Space Night Vol. VIII (Disc II)

Jazz. Smooth jazz. Mellow. Mellow groove. Lounge. The preceding words describe the experience this track establishes. The piano carries the melody of this track from beginning to end and you become engrossed with every note.

Jazzy Lounge's Anniversary

December 13, 2007 will mark the four year anniversary of Jazzy Lounge radio on Live365. Jazzy Lounge's initial format was directly influenced by one of my favorite stations and syndicated radio programs, Musical Starstreams, hosted by Forest. From the program mix on his station, I created a spreadsheet of tracks for future purchase and eventually found out that much of what I was cataloging was related to downtempo and chillout music. When I finalized the concept of Jazzy Lounge, those genres just mentioned would be my focus- laid back, mellow, funky grooves.

I began to build my music library purchasing mainly compilations of downtempo and chillout tracks. One day, while perusing the music aisle, I saw an album that had the word "Ultimate" in it's title. Having recently purchased another album with the word "ultimate" in its title, "Ultimate Chill Out", I got excited and totally ignored the last word in it's title, "Lounge." I dropped the 27 track, 2-disc set into the CD player, listened to all tracks, and said to myself, "Most of this is garbage." I found just three tracks to add to future playlists. But, I gave the album another listen and found myself saying, "This CD is tight!" I eventually marked fourteen tracks from this compilation for airplay- jazzy, lounge tracks. That experience helped me realize one listen is never enough when reviewing tracks for airplay. From that day forward I began to expand the boundaries of genres Jazzy Lounge would play. Now you hear:
Acid Jazz, Ambient, Bossa Nova, Breakbeat, Celtic, Chill, Christmas, Dance, Downtempo, Drum 'n' Bass, Dub, Electro, Electronica, Ethnic Fusion, Funk, Hard House, Hip-Hop/Rap, House, IDM, Latin Dance, Lounge, Love/Romance, Neo-Soul, New Age, Nu jazz, Pop, R&B/Urban, Reggae, Rock, Smooth Jazz, Spoken Word, Top 40, Trance, Trip Hop, Underground Hip-Hop, Urban Contemporary, Worldbeat
which is why Jazzy Lounge radio currently labels itself as a "freeform electronica station".

To entice the listener, Jazzy Lounge concentrates on creating moods or musical biorhythms- dance one minute, chill the next, some female vocals, then lounge, followed by a cross genre jazz mix. Hmph. I guess as moody as I am.

I look forward to expanding the reach of Jazzy Lounge in 2008, and I want you to be a part of it. Feedback, comments, suggestions and partnering is welcomed. Send emails to: a n n i v e r s a r y (at) jazzylounge.com.

The Jazzy Lounge Song of the Week

November 5-11, 2007
Jahka "The Solar House" Hydrophonics

"The Solar House" has been in rotation on Jazzy Lounge since June 2, 2007 and is one of the longest running songs added to our playlist. It has spent seven weeks in the top ten, one week at number 1 and four weeks in the number 2 spot. "The Solar House" was pulled from the compilation Hydrophonics which contains dub, jazzy house and downtempo tracks.

What's unique about "The Solar House" is the danceable, funky rhythms and the great trumpet section. The 15 second intro provides brief tension as a sampled female voice glides over the bass and trumpet. Funky house rhythms follow, punctuated by a jazzy horn section.

I would love to be in the audience of one of their Cyberdread DJ sets when this track is played. That old dude on the dance floor would be me.

An Independent Musician Accused of Selling Out

In a blog posted on Myspace, I read a question posed by an upcoming independent artist. She asked her fans, readers and subscribers whether on not she had sold out now that her music is heard in a television commercial and a prime time show. A few of her fans accused her of selling out- though most wished her well in her new found success. Everyone is entitled to their opinion in determining who is a sell out. I sometimes wonder how they arrive at their conclusion.

Because this artist has obtained a degree of fame- and is now an opening act in an upcoming tour- doesn't mean they're a sell out. When your material garners a worldwide following because it's excellent, it's no fault of the artist. If there's one redeeming fact to satisfy her few disappointed fans, she doesn't have a label deal or a distributor- yet.

The Jazzy Lounge Song of the Week

October 1-7, 2007
Once again I've come across a song with strong elements woven throughout. It's "Circles" by Amanaska. The first time I heard it, the melodic arrangement grabbed me with it's rhythms and mixture of electronic and real instruments. After a few listens, I began to focus on the lyrics and I felt I was listening to a brand new song. Intelligent lyrics based on an event, an experience, suffered only by the author. You are able to visualize each section (partial lyrics):
The moon is rising in the east,
Waves roll in and your heart beats
Our eyes look towards the heavens
And we think about the future
Now we’re asking the question again,
Who to keep out and who to let in,
Are we looking for someone to blame,
Believing the lies, and talking in circles again.
During the first 20 bars before the vocals, Simon Lewis creates an intro that, if played at a live concert, should only be heard in a small venue. Those who realize the intimacy of a small venue versus an auditorium know what I'm talking about. Add the melodic female and male vocals and this song packs an emotional whollop that will imprint your being.

Amanaska was founded by Australians Simon Lewis and Stephen Joyce, but is only headed by Simon now.

A Jazzy Lounge Music Review
Horizontal Grooves... This is first compilation released by the Anything Goze Group. And if this is representative of future releases, hopefully the wait for the next compilation will be short lived. Compiled by Christophe Goze, Horizontal Grooves is a fantastic album featuring 12 exclusive, never before released tracks by some of today's most popular artists involved in the electronic/chillout genre - including Amanaska, Bob Holroyd, Afterlife, Chris Coco, Cantoma, Natcho Sotomayor, Vargo and Lenny Ibizarre.

Excellent grooves and moods throughout, the vocal highlights include Danni Minogue's stunning vocals on `Take me inside', Nicola Hitchcock's (ex Mandalay) alluring charm throughout `Feel' and Amanaska's powerful "Circles (Horizontal Remix)" while the instrumental standout's include Cantoma's "Truevich" and Ohm-G's "By Chance".

Most of the tracks contains vocals which makes for a very melodic compilation with a lyrical focus. Don't be the last on your block to add Horizontal Grooves to your collection.

A Jazzy Lounge Music Review

Nova Natura 3... It's not often you can find an electronic album where every track is interesting individually and collectively. Nova Natura 3, the third installment of this compilation series from Cosmisleaf Records, accomplishes just that, though, offering a wide variety of styles from artists contributing everything from downtempo to ambient to trance and dub.

"Un Faccia Una Razza" by Cydelix vs Red Eye Express is a downtempo tune with a reggae feel without the reggae. Melodic and dreamy with sampled voices. "Life Support" by SIDE LINER starts off haunting and mysterious before it breaks in with a heavy bass and percussion groove with additional samples accenting the track. One of the best electronic tracks I've heard. "Sunshine Velvet" by D. Batistatos effectively uses keyboards and synthesizers to maintain a steady groove that allows your mind to float with every note of the track. Gnw by Sunhize provides nothing but sheer excitement from beginning to the end of this track. Very rhythmic and seductive it can make your hair stand up.

If you love electronic music, get your hands on Nova Natura 3. You won't be disappointed.
