An Independent Musician Accused of Selling Out

In a blog posted on Myspace, I read a question posed by an upcoming independent artist. She asked her fans, readers and subscribers whether on not she had sold out now that her music is heard in a television commercial and a prime time show. A few of her fans accused her of selling out- though most wished her well in her new found success. Everyone is entitled to their opinion in determining who is a sell out. I sometimes wonder how they arrive at their conclusion.

Because this artist has obtained a degree of fame- and is now an opening act in an upcoming tour- doesn't mean they're a sell out. When your material garners a worldwide following because it's excellent, it's no fault of the artist. If there's one redeeming fact to satisfy her few disappointed fans, she doesn't have a label deal or a distributor- yet.
Continuing to span the globe to locate music new and exciting, the artists below supply a taste of chill, lounge, jazz, world and more.
Step into the Jazzy Lounge, relax and envelope yourself in the global sounds of 187 tracks listed in this week's playlist.

The Jazzy Lounge Song of the Week

October 1-7, 2007
Once again I've come across a song with strong elements woven throughout. It's "Circles" by Amanaska. The first time I heard it, the melodic arrangement grabbed me with it's rhythms and mixture of electronic and real instruments. After a few listens, I began to focus on the lyrics and I felt I was listening to a brand new song. Intelligent lyrics based on an event, an experience, suffered only by the author. You are able to visualize each section (partial lyrics):
The moon is rising in the east,
Waves roll in and your heart beats
Our eyes look towards the heavens
And we think about the future
Now we’re asking the question again,
Who to keep out and who to let in,
Are we looking for someone to blame,
Believing the lies, and talking in circles again.
During the first 20 bars before the vocals, Simon Lewis creates an intro that, if played at a live concert, should only be heard in a small venue. Those who realize the intimacy of a small venue versus an auditorium know what I'm talking about. Add the melodic female and male vocals and this song packs an emotional whollop that will imprint your being.

Amanaska was founded by Australians Simon Lewis and Stephen Joyce, but is only headed by Simon now.

A Jazzy Lounge Music Review
Horizontal Grooves... This is first compilation released by the Anything Goze Group. And if this is representative of future releases, hopefully the wait for the next compilation will be short lived. Compiled by Christophe Goze, Horizontal Grooves is a fantastic album featuring 12 exclusive, never before released tracks by some of today's most popular artists involved in the electronic/chillout genre - including Amanaska, Bob Holroyd, Afterlife, Chris Coco, Cantoma, Natcho Sotomayor, Vargo and Lenny Ibizarre.

Excellent grooves and moods throughout, the vocal highlights include Danni Minogue's stunning vocals on `Take me inside', Nicola Hitchcock's (ex Mandalay) alluring charm throughout `Feel' and Amanaska's powerful "Circles (Horizontal Remix)" while the instrumental standout's include Cantoma's "Truevich" and Ohm-G's "By Chance".

Most of the tracks contains vocals which makes for a very melodic compilation with a lyrical focus. Don't be the last on your block to add Horizontal Grooves to your collection.

A Jazzy Lounge Music Review

Nova Natura 3... It's not often you can find an electronic album where every track is interesting individually and collectively. Nova Natura 3, the third installment of this compilation series from Cosmisleaf Records, accomplishes just that, though, offering a wide variety of styles from artists contributing everything from downtempo to ambient to trance and dub.

"Un Faccia Una Razza" by Cydelix vs Red Eye Express is a downtempo tune with a reggae feel without the reggae. Melodic and dreamy with sampled voices. "Life Support" by SIDE LINER starts off haunting and mysterious before it breaks in with a heavy bass and percussion groove with additional samples accenting the track. One of the best electronic tracks I've heard. "Sunshine Velvet" by D. Batistatos effectively uses keyboards and synthesizers to maintain a steady groove that allows your mind to float with every note of the track. Gnw by Sunhize provides nothing but sheer excitement from beginning to the end of this track. Very rhythmic and seductive it can make your hair stand up.

If you love electronic music, get your hands on Nova Natura 3. You won't be disappointed.

Hip-Hop on Jazzy Lounge
Lately Hip-Hop has been receiving a bad "rap" through the media, whatever the medium. There are bona fide tracks that fly under the AM/FM radar. That which qualifies as well written, well arranged and well performed Hip-Hop gets added to the Jazzy Lounge playlist. Five Deez has an original track titled "Sextraterrestrial" that was picked up on the Jazzy Lounge radar screen this week and was identified as friendly. Two other Hip-Hop tracks currently grace the ears of the Jazzy Lounge audience, Dna6 and Pete Miser out of 180+ tracks currently in rotation. These three acts have written clever, intelligent songs worthy of airplay and Jazzy Lounge is proud to introduce these tracks to an audience outside of the Hip-Hop crowd.

Happy Hour in the Gene Pool...

Happy hour? What does it mean to you? Various phrases are applied in defining happy hour all leading to the same result. But we're going to add one more definition to the term:

one hour and three minutes spent listening to this great album Happy Hour in the Gene Pool by Evolve.

Evolve is the brainchild of Red- DJ, musician and producer. This release included musicians Chris Barron, Freddy Kron, Evan Avery and vocalists Margo Reymundo, Tantrum and Cassandra Rachel combining their talents to create one fantastic album. The finely crafted electronic tracks weave you through mellow grooves ("August Moon") to major funky grooves ("Well I Gotta Story"; "Do You Know This One?") to sensual vocals ("Couldn't Be More Wrong"; "The Way Back") to funky hip-hop flavored tracks ("By Definition: Cool"; "Mice On The Ice"). This is not a one-trick pony, offering up enough variety to keep the listener involved with Evolve from the first track to the last.

Within the inside cover of Happy Hour in the Gene Pool you'll find a definition of the word evolve:

to develop something gradually, often into something more complex or advanced, or undergo such development.

Knowing how great this album is, don't make us wait too long for the next evolutionary stage of Evolve.

The Jazzy Lounge Song of the Week

October 1-7, 2007
Motel168 "Our Words" Tall Stories Big Lives
As you dig into the archive of lyrics, you'll notice that gems are a rarity. There are plenty of excellent songs and even more good songs. But what I'm referring to now is a gem. Specifically the song "Our Words" by Motel168- written, produced and performed by the talented electronic duo of Philip Hochstrate (producer/pianist) and Pegy Gaile (singer/songwriter). Pegy Gaile has written a tender melody where the words, melody and vocal style grab your attention. A true Top Ten performer. Currently No. 3 for the week of October 3rd.
